Bioethics


Bioethics is the branch of applied ethics that studies the value implications of practices and developments in life sciences, medicine, and health care. Modern advances in the technologies of genetics, organ transplantation, life-sustaining treatments, and other biomedical areas raise a host of thorny bioethical issues and questions. The following websites offer an extensive set of resources for understanding and analyzing topics in bioethics.


The American Journal of Bioethics

· Sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania, this site was founded in 1993 as the first website devoted to the topic of bioethics
· Informs the legal, clinical, academic, scientific, and religious communities about ethical issues in medicine and the biomedical sciences
· Features current news, commentaries, book reviews, job announcements, and more
· While some documents are publicly available, full access to all site resources is restricted to paid subscribers

Bioethics Resources on the Web

· Presented by the National Institutes of Health
· Discusses the role and position of NIH in bioethics
· Provides a useful "starting point" for researchers by organizing and linking to an array of other resources

· Sponsored by the University of Washington as part of the Bioethics Education Project for its medical school
· Discusses a range of bioethics topics, providing overviews and answering common questions
· Provides a methodology for conducting a "bioethics workup" in a clinical setting
· Offers links to related websites, readings, organizations, and other resources

Center for Bioethics

· Authored by the Center for Bioethics at the University of Minnesota
· Offers access to research studies, academic courses, publications, news, and other resources in bioethics
