Leukemia
Leukemia is cancer that originates in the bone marrow, the soft, spongy inner
portion of certain bones. Leukemia develops when a leukocyte (white blood cell)
transforms into a malignant cell that multiplies uncontrollably, thereby crowding
out the normal blood cells. About 31,500 new cases of leukemia were diagnosed in
the United States in 2001.
