Native American Health Resources


Certain diseases and conditions are known to affect the Native American population with more frequency and/or severity than other populations. The following Web sites and organizations focus on health topics that relate to the Native American population.

Indian Health Service
The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. In the Nationwide Programs and Initiatives area, check out the health education program which has a Patient Education Resources page, with sections containing teaching resources and patient education brochures. In the Medical and Professional Programs area, there are a number of health programs: women's health, child health, maternal child health, dental health, consumer health (http://www.ihs.gov/MedicalPrograms/consumer-health/) and more. http://www.ihs.gov/index.asp

Tribal Health Connections
Tribal Health Connections is Internet-based health information and education project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in cooperation with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine health science libraries in the Four Corners states: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. This Web site contains sections on: consumer health, alternative/native/complementary medicine, diabetes information for patients and providers, Indian health, and an alphabetical list of health topics. http://www.tribehealth.org/

Native Health Databases
The Native Health Databases contain bibliographic information and abstracts of health-related articles, reports, surveys, and other resource documents pertaining to the health and health care of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Canadian First Nations. The databases provide information for the benefit, use, and education of organizations and individuals with an interest in health-related issues, programs, and initiatives regarding North American indigenous peoples. This Web site also has a great statistics section, containing links to all types of health statistics. http://hsc.unm.edu/library/nhd/

NativeWeb
NativeWeb is an international, nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to using telecommunications including computer technology and the Internet to disseminate information from and about indigenous nations, peoples, and organizations around the world. The Web site provides current news, links to organizations and a resources database with over 40 different topics, including health. http://www.nativeweb.org/

Native American Diabetes Project
The Native American Diabetes Project's goal is to help people eat healthy foods and increase exercise. This is done by working together with Native American communities. Ideas from the communities are used to make a program that is specifically designed for Rio Grande Pueblo people. This Web site provides a curriculum that can be adapted and modified for your group; registration is requested. http://www.laplaza.org/health/dwc/nadp/

National Resource Center on Native American Aging
The National Resource Center on Native American Aging was established in 1994 at the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks. The resource center is collaboration between the UND Office of American Indian Student Services and the UND Center for Rural Health. With one of the nation's largest enrollments of Native American students, the University of North Dakota has a long-standing tradition of service to Native Americans. http://www.med.und.nodak.edu/depts/rural//nrcnaa/

National Indian Health Board
The NIHB, a non-profit organization, conducts research, policy analysis, program assessment and development, national and regional meeting planning, training and technical assistance programs, and project management. These services are provided to tribes, Area Health Boards, tribal organizations, federal agencies, and private foundations. http://www.nihb.org/
